Just like its title,
Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity at
New York New York Hotel brings with it a world of mystery. This performance is much more than you’re average Cirque du Soleil show which is usually bright and family friendly. Zumanity will open your eyes to a sensual side of human culture that is normally suppressed and unexplored. Zumanity is about sex and can be described as nothing less than a piece of art and the subject matter is discussed tastefully.
Inside, the European opera house feeling is reinforced. Unlike other
Cirque du Soleil productions, this purpose-built theater -- like Zumanity itself -- does not involve a lot of technical trickery or mechanical constructs. It is intimate and refined, a seemingly simple stage with an extended apron protruding from beneath gorgeous dark red curtains. Winding staircases flank both sides of the stage, leading up to a movable platform for the Zumanity Orchestra, the band that provides the soundtrack for the show.
A comedic quartet appears sporadically throughout the proceedings to break up the tension and remind us all that sex should always be -- above all else -- fun. When you boil down the multiple elements of Zumanity, that's really the underlying theme: Though some of the acts present serious images of eroticism, we should never forget that our bodies lives are meant for pure pleasure and sheer joy, which is meant to be shared. So let loose, play and taunt your way into this show. You'll see that those in Zumanity are not that much different from yourself.
